the hang seng gained 2%. wall street investors are waiting for a fiscal cliff deal. stocks were unchanged. the dow lost 13 points while the nasdaq was down five points. bank profits are getting bigger. the financial industry earned $37.6 billion in the third quarter. that's an increase of more than 6% and it could lead to more lending. there's good news on the housing front. a survey shows housing prices were up more than 6% in october. that's the best gain in six years. starting in 2016 the disney characters are coming to netflix. they landed exclusive rights to stream disney movies before they air on cable networks. netflix will get some of disney's classic movies. no financial terms of the deal were released. and just in time for the holidays, starbucks is introducing a $454 gift card. the card is made of etched steel. comes with $400 on it. the reason why it's $450? it costs $50 just to make the card. there will be only 5,000 available and they will only be sold on the website gilt.com. the card comes with a gold level starbucks membership for $400 you can buy 57 cups of starbucks new

of an overall deal before want fiscal cliff. how big is the deal going to be? how much in revenues? how much are we going to do with entitlements and then it has to go through the committee of jurisdiction how to do tax reform right and health care right. you need to come up with a top line parent of the deal and make sure it's big enough to fix the problem. one of the concerns i have is start negotiating down and down and down and not really fix the problem and there's no impetus to finish up. >> they have to scale back the cliff, the tax increases and spending cuts. the second is the debt ceiling. and the third thing is the path to fiscal sustainability, the long-term deficit reduction, tax reform, reforms to the entitlement programs that get to us a stable g.d.p. in the future. and that has to all be done at once. i don't think you can do this in parts. >> schieffer: let me ask the question which i'm sure there is no answer to, but what do you all think is most likely to happen? >> i think we're going to go over the cliff for a couple weeks, fingers crossed, we're then going to have a dea

urged that we resolve both the fiscal cliff and the debt limit at the same time. what we don't want to do is go the brink on the economy now and then threaten the economy again two months later. we have to deal with both problems together in the weeks ahead for the good of the economy. >> there's a cumulative psychological effect. if we don't deal with it quickly it builds. as you pointed out it's already starting? >> i think there's a modest effect so far. i don't think it's dramatic. it's incremental. the closer you get the bigger it gets and then it gets somewhat more serious after january 1st. the other side of the coin i wish this weren't so but to get movement, particularly on the republican side or on the tax cuts for very high end people which average, this is an average tax cut of 130,000 a year for people that make over a million a year in my view we can't afford that. to get that kind of movement we might actually need to go into early january, maybe the stock market fluctuates a bit, there's great concern if it's a big story in the media now it's an
